Complexities of Endodontic Retreatment

Lecture Description

There are several factors that make the root canal treatment a challenge. Classifying the complexity of endodontic treatment is one way to identify factors that may interfere with its success.

The knowledge of these difficulties and the appropriate derivation of the treatment, constitute a substantial element for the quality assistance to the patient, and the final aim: preserving the teeth.

Recent technological advances in endodontic treatment has lead to preserve teeth that were previously considered untreatable. However, both, the technology and the instruments/materials should not be considered as a substitute for the clinical skills and experience of the professional. With this concept in mind, it is imperative to obtain a careful sequence of case selection and treatment plan, based on clinical factors and literature review.

To retreat the canal system, several techniques are explained in the literature in order to achieve the success goals. The purpose of this presentation is, using several complex cases supported in the recent review of the literature, make a rational dialogue in order to simplify the process of the decision making.

• Postgraduate in Advanced Aesthetic Dentistry from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid
• Assistant Professor of the Master’s degree in Endodontics at the International University of Catalunya – Barcelona
• Assistant Professor of the Postgraduate Course in Endodontics at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Lisbon
