Lecture Description

Triple Topic

Part 1: Key occlusal concepts in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics

Occlusion and occlusal concepts are very important in the practice of dentistry. Yet, they are often imperfectly understood and incorrectly applied in clinical practice. The use of implants brings additional occlusal nuances that need to be considered. This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of occlusion from biologic and clinical perspectives. This lecture will cover key occlusal concepts (centric occlusion, VDO, parafunction etc.), assessment of occlusion, applications of occlusal concepts in fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics, occlusal schemes, periodontics and occlusion, occlusion-related risks, and complications (self-biting, uncomfortable occlusion). Attendees will gain practical strategies to evaluate, manage, and refine occlusal schemes to optimize patient comfort, function, and long-term stability.

Part 2: Prosthodontic treatment planning for long-term success

Effective prosthodontic treatment planning requires a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s functional, esthetic, and biologic needs, while balancing clinical realities and patient expectations. This lecture will provide a structured approach to diagnosis, data collection, and treatment sequencing in partial and complete edentulism utilizing fixed, removable, and implant-based approaches. Emphasis will be placed on risk assessment, interdisciplinary considerations, and long-term maintenance strategies. Through case-based discussions, participants will gain insight into common challenges, decision-making frameworks, and evidence-based principles that guide predictable prosthodontic outcomes. This lecture will review common reasons for patient dissatisfaction with prosthodontic treatment and best strategies for preventing such dissatisfaction as well as addressing dissatisfaction when it arises. We will delve into effective communication strategies with patients that foster trust and realistic expectations through collaborative and informed decision-making process. The lecture will review best practices for obtaining and maintaining consent including written communication with patients and treatment collaborators.
